30 days, 106 pages, 50,147 words, 2 narrators, 10 major characters, 4 antagonists, 11 (completed) chapters, countless cups of tea, 7 days of Murdock-related shenanigans and 2 visits to the doctor. November has been a busy month to say the least!

I decided to take a moment on the last day of National Novel Writing Month to look back over the exercise and see if I learned anything from it (aside from new and improved ways to procrastinate). This has been my first year taking part in the race to fifty thousand words and like all marathons it's been a long haul. I can understand why not everybody finds it a useful method of creative writing. The focus on quantity over quality can at times make the words sound forced and lacklustre, and the pressure of an impending deadline can really suck the fun out of a hobby that at all other times is an enjoyable form of escapism. I'd be lying if I said that every day of the past month has been fun, just as I'd be lying if I told you that the book I set out to write went totally according to plan during that time, but I guess that's all part of the journey. Minor characters who were only meant to serve a purpose in one scene managed to con their way into becoming part of the regular cast, others who had a more important role have been toned down a little. However, despite changes I can honestly say that I'm happy with where the experience has brought me. One month ago, I had a lot of ideas and many thousands of words worth of notes, but nothing substantial in the way of actual pen-to-paper (or in this case fingers-to-keyboard?) writing. What I have now may be rough and incomplete, but it's given me the confidence to press on and see how this mudsucker's going to end.

My first NaNoWriMo? It may have put my already shaky social life on the back bench, but I like to think it's been worthwhile. If nothing else, it's given me the push off the edge I was in desperate need of and made me start the damn thing instead of just planning it to death. :XD: So, if you're anything like me and can't shut off the internal critic, this is an exercise that's well worth doing. Also good for the procrastinators, though I can't say I've been cured of that... only made more cunning at hiding it.

Next stop: the end! Let's see if this daily word count can last another month or so!

It's getting close to the end of week three, so thought I'd post a quick update!

The month is drawing to a close and the finish line is in sight for National Novel Writing Month. Having never taken part before, it's certainly been a learning experience for me! I've been writing for fun for a long time now, but it's been a long time since I ever finished something I started; not for lack of trying but for loss of interest. Usually I reach some point just past the middle of what I'm working on and just lose interest; simple as that. The plot hits a wall, the characters start protesting ("I'm not going in there! Have you seen how dangerous it is? Why do you like torturing me?" :noes: ), or sometimes life just gets in the way. At the beginning of the month, I wasn't certain that I'd finish the book I started with, but I think that this month has taught me a lesson in something I've always been pretty bad at: turning off the inner editor. She still strikes up every now and again, tells me that the last paragraph is awful and that I'm in the wrong line of work, but with a deadline looming she gets shoved out of the forefront and gets to sit out and watch the match from the sidelines. Sure, maybe the last paragraph did suck, but that's what revisions are for. With ten days left to go, who knows what surprises may be in store? Perhaps I won't finish it, but that's not what's important right now. Right now I'm on target and I'm making the time to sit down and get on with it every day (despite the hypnotic pull of the internet... curse you, Facebook!) which is what I'll be taking away from the experience. In ten days, even if I'm no further or left with a cast of characters screaming at me for the torments I've been piling on them, I'll come away from my first NaNoWriMo with two important lessons learned; lessons that seem obvious but have always passed me by. You have to write every day, no matter how bad the result may seem. The bad can be cleared up later! And on top of that, the inner editor needs a time-out until it's her turn up to bat.

So, to everybody taking part, I wish you luck on the home stretch! May your lessons be easy ones, may your word counts be high and your characters eager (or at least still standing). :giggle: Having spoken to others taking part, I know that everybody will take something different away from this month, whether they reach the 50,000 word count or not. Even if we never reach the word count, the point of the month is to develop habits. Good luck everybody!

Well, it's that time again! Another journal entry, another way to shirk my word count. I'll probably regret it tomorrow... :XD:

Week two of NaNoWriMo has been a long chain of distractions for me. I hope it's going better for everybody else because I'm starting to think that someone out there is trying to tell me something! Admittedly, this all started about half way through week one when I started to feel... odd. There's no plainer way to describe it (plus after all the flowery language I've been using to get across how much of a self-important jerk my narrator is, I'm quite happy to just type simply for now). About half way through week one I started to lose taste and feeling in one side of my mouth, which persisted and turned into an inability to blink. To cut a long, frustrating story short, I've spent just over a week with the right side of my face totally paralysed. :XD: Miraculously, my word count is somehow on target despite the heroic amount of eyedrops and prescription pills I've been going through, but it's definitely not helping the second week lull; especially knowing that this could last anywhere between two weeks and two years. :noes: On the plus side, I'm convinced that the novelty has worn off for those around me (yay!) as the pirate/Phantom of the Opera/Harvey Dent/Little Nicky jokes have mostly dried up.

Still, there's nothing I can do about it, so I'm trying to think positively! I'm still just about on target (I've no idea how; I've spent the whole week split between squinting at the screen through bleary eyes and trying to pull faces in the mirror) and have my fingers crossed that this will be on the way out soon. Plus it's as good a reason as any to shut the door and avoid the world! I really hope that everyone else is on target and having a better time of things. :D Keep going!

Oh, nearly forgot! There will be new plushie pics posted soon and once they're done I'll be working on the commissions I've got lined up. Sorry for the delay, it's not been a great week for staring at tiny stitches.

NaNoWriMo

2 min read
Hello! It's been a while since I updated this space, so I thought I'd leave a quick note to explain why I might not be around that much during the next month.

For those who haven't heard of it, this month is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) so for the next 29 days there will be a lot of people shut up in their rooms or squeezed into internet cafés trying to hit the big 50k goal. I've decided to take part this year with a view to using the 50k as a nice, comfortable buffer to pad out the middle of my work-in-progress, so if any updates regarding to plushies and commissions take a little longer than normal then there's the reason! Those of you who have already talked to me about commissions, I'll do my best to get them done as soon as possible. I'm sorry for this delay, but I hope it won't be a very noticable one... it's just that the usual weekly update may not be so timely as normal. :D I've not forgotten about them!

Good luck to all those taking part!

1.What does your Deviantart name mean and why?
The Guru came from Rayearth (it's a revived obsession!) Embarrassingly enough, the 'Lazer' bit came from one of my first characters. My ten-year-old self didn't believe in appropriate character names. ^^;

2. What fandom were you obsessed with when you joined and what are you into now?
I think it was Les Miserables back then. Now I'm going through yet another Rayearth phase, but A-Team is my one true love.

3. How many watchers do you have now?
More than I deserve. :XD: Wow, is it really 46?

4. Name 3 of your favourite artists on DA.
:iconghosthuntress: who has such stellar colouring skills that she can make even my rubbish look pretty. :D
:iconlimpet666: whose art style I love. Wish I had such a good grasp on... well, everything.
:iconajhoward: whose art I am privileged to look at every morning when I open my door. AJ, you have a gift! And I'm still in love with the jacket.

5. Do you comment, fav, or both?
I try to do both, but a lot of the time I'm quicker to fav.

6. Do you participate in clubs' contests here on DA?
Nah, but plenty of memes!

7. What is your most popular submission?
I'm kinda annoyed that one of my most poorly drawn submissions ('Why Laurie Hates Rorschach') is still most viewed/commented on. I can't stand to look at it now. :XD: Most faved is 'England Discovers Yaoi.'

8. What are your favourite non-anime TV shows?
A-Team, World's Craziest Fools, Mock the Week, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: Voyager, How I Met Your Mother, Russell Howard's Good News, Top Gear

9. What are the things you wish you could draw better?
Hands and just any correct proportion would be nice. Also, I've been finding out while working on my newest pic that I can't really draw female figures.

10. Summer or winter?
Winter, but I prefer Autumn.

11. Rain or Sun?
Not a fan of the heat, so I'll go for rain.

12. What are your favourite types of music?
Bit of everything! My taste in music is fairly eclectic, but mostly made up of rock, metal, j-pop and bluesy stuff.

13. PC or Mac?
PC

14. Anime or Manga?
Both. It's hard to compare the original to the series, but both work in their own way... unless produced by 4Kids.

15. Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi!

16. Read or TV?
Read. I mainly use tv for background noise.

17. How many hours a day do you spend on DA?
It varies. Some days I can be hanging around here for hours, but then I'll disappear for days at a time.

18. Name a hidden talent.
I'm a percussionist! Not widely known anymore because my dad sold my kit when I went to uni. *sad panda*

19. Flash or traditional cartoons?
Even though I mostly draw digital pics now, I love traditional cartoons. I grew up on them!

20. What is your favourite fast food restaurant?
Domino's Pizza. (Although I live on an island with no fast food restaurants :noes: )

21. What are your top 3 favorite books? (not manga)
Les Miserables - Victor Hugo
Enduring Love - Ian McEwan
Star Wars: Jedi Search (I know that's a random one, but I've loved it since I was a kid!)

22. Wii or PlayStation?
Probably Playstation. I was more a Gamecube girl when the PS1 and 2 were around, but the Wii has very few good games. What the hell, Nintendo?

23. Name 4 of your favourite bands/singers.
Queen, Philip Quast, Meatloaf, Iron Maiden

24. Are you a fast, slow, or medium typist?
Pretty fast. :)

25. Do you like Denny's?
Never been

26. What is your favourite smiley?
:iconmurdocklaplz:

27. What is your favourite type of pie?
Apple?

28. Have you ever stayed up for 24 hours?
It was the best way to get essays done at uni! :XD:

29. Do you go on YouTube a lot?
A fair bit! Especially since discovering the Epic Rap Battles of History. :giggle:

30. Are you a member on any other sites besides DA?
Facebook, Gaia, You Tube... that's about it.

31. Do you cosplay?
Yeah, but I'm just a rookie! Mostly Hetalia stuff, although did my own lame rendition of Murdock/Captain Cab in May.

32. Fruits or sweets?
Bit of both...

33. Plain, buttered or salted popcorn?
Neither thanks.

34. Have you skipped school?
Nah, sadly I was one of those goody-goody types all through school. :D

35. Have you been on a plane?
All the time! I live on an island, it's the only way off unless you want to spend hours on a boat.

36. Have you swam in an ocean?
Yup!

37. Have you been ice skating?
An ice rink is set up in town every year, but I've only tried it once.

38. Favorite vacation spot?
London! Maybe it's because I'm from a small place, but I love that there's so much to do! The Expo is so much fun, I love geeking out with other obsessive people. :XD: Oh, and all the merchandise...

39. Ever been on TV?
*headdesk* Sadly, yes. When I was a kid I was caught on camera with my mum and gran. It was part of a video postcard that was used to promote the island. :sarcasm:

40. Favorite salad and dressing?
*shrug* Tomato salad, dunno about dressing...

41. What do you do to relax?
Listen to music, play video games, read or draw.

42. What is the last film you saw in the theater?
X-Men: First Class

43. Favorite Sandwich?
Cheese and tomato

44. If you could go anywhere in the world...
I'd like to visit Japan one day.

45. Favorite time of the day?
I'm torn between around 11am and 11pm. Most of the time I've got the house/living room to myself at these times.

46. What did you want to be when you were little?
Weirdly enough, I wanted to be a pilot. This was pre-A-Team, so not sure where it came from. However, poor eyesight and motion sickness soon got rid of that idea. :XD:

47. What do you want to be now?
I'm gunning to be an author right now. Fingers crossed!
(Now might be a bad time to note that this should be my writing time... now that I'm reaching a deadline I keep looking for distractions... oops)

48. If you could eat with one person, who would it be?
I don't know, that seems like an odd question. I'd feel self-conscious eating with someone I look up to. :XD:

49. What person would you hate to be stuck in a room with?
Jack Black or Jordan. I'd probably start sewing up mouths.

50. When is your birthday?
23rd of May. :)

51. Favorite type of ice cream?
I know it sounds weird, but the best ice cream flavour I've ever tried was 'brown bread.' Much, much nicer than it sounds.

52. Last book you read?
Star Trek: Imzadi. If any Trekkies are reading, this has some particularly amusing Barclay bits in it, but they're riiiiiight near the end.

53. Which store would you max out a credit card at?
Does Amazon count?

54. Do you buy / sell / both on eBay?
I've had to keep myself away. Not been on for almost a month now, yay! It was reaching the point where I'd buy something really stupid just because it had the logo of something I like on it. Most random purchase? A-Team thimbles. You read that correctly. No idea what I was thinking.

55. What is the most annoying thing people ask you?
The most annoying thing anybody has asked me was when I was at uni. Went out for a social drink with my flatmates and a random girl asked what I'd taken. No, I'd not taken anything; hadn't even had an alcoholic drink. Just got one of those daydreamy faces, I guess...

56. Favorite all time movie?
That's not fair. :noes: Probably Star Wars. Yes, the whole trilogy. No, not the new trilogy.

57. What were your favorite shows when you were a kid?
I loved the X-Men cartoon that played in the 90s! Was also a sucker for things like Pokémon and Cardcaptors.

58. What are you listening to right now?
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son

59. What is the last thing you ate?
Chicken soup

60. If you were a crayon what colour would you be?
Red... because nobody can ever find the red crayon. You open the packet, and poof! It's gone!

61. What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex?
Probably eyes

62. Favorite sport to play?
Not very sporty. Maybe tennis

63. Favorite Day of the Year?
Don't really have one. Halloween is a good excuse to get dressed up, though!

64. Hugs or Kisses?
Hugs!

65. Vanilla or Chocolate?
Vanilla

66. Favorite Board Game?
Atmosfear [sic]. I played a few years ago with some friends and apprently turned very competitive and evil. :mwahaha:

My dad's cooking.

68. What inspires you?
Music

69. Do you have any piercings?
Nope

70. How many siblings do you have?
Three: older brother, older sister, younger brother.

71. Bacon Bits or croutons?
Neither thanks... :noes:

72. Favourite Day of the Week?
Sunday. I've given myself one day off a week from working on the book. I get to sleep in, watch the Voyager marathon and play video games. When I was at my last job, Sunday was my least favourite day. Funny that...

73. Favourite phrase?
"Play is the highest form of research."

74. Favourite Restaurant?
White D'Or. Really nice local place, but best to book somewhere else if my friends are coming. It's one of those places where you share all the dishes, and between everybody's odd eating habits and diets we can only agree on bread and chips. :XD:

75. Favourite animal?
Cats!

76. Favourite thing to do outside.
Take photos

77. Favourite thing to do when it's raining?
Write, draw, play games, the usual.

Mulan

79. Do you like coffee?
Bleck! No way!

80: Tag 8 people.
If you've read this to the end, consider yourself tagged!
